Recent iPhones and iPads can store photos as HEIC, a filename extension commonly used for images in a HEIF container. HEIC saves storage efficiently and can carry metadata and related image information, but some upload forms, older Windows applications, printers, and websites accept only JPG. Converting creates a compatible copy; it does not make the original obsolete.
Use the HEIC to JPG converter when the receiving service explicitly requires JPG or cannot preview the HEIC file.
Our HEIC decode test
On August 8, 2026, we created a 640×480 synthetic color-and-motion pattern, encoded it to HEIC with heif-enc at quality 90 and quality 50, then decoded both files to JPG at quality 90 with heif-convert in the Convertr worker image. The high-quality HEIC measured 33,570 bytes and the lower-quality HEIC 12,756 bytes. Both JPG results remained 640×480 in sRGB and measured about 30 KB.
This test isolates an important tradeoff: decoding a more compressed HEIC to a similarly sized JPG does not recover the detail discarded by the earlier HEIC encode. It also confirms dimensions and color-space reporting for a simple single-image fixture, but it does not cover an iPhone’s EXIF orientation, HDR gain map, burst, depth, or Live Photo companion data. Reproduce the check with a generated PNG, heif-enc -q 90 and -q 50, then inspect both JPEGs with identify; use a real camera original for metadata decisions.
Try the original before converting
Current Apple software, many browsers, and updated photo applications may already handle HEIC. If the file opens and the destination accepts it, keeping HEIC avoids a lossy JPEG encode. Convert for a real compatibility requirement, not because the extension is unfamiliar.
If you regularly need JPG from an iPhone, Apple also provides camera and transfer settings that can favor compatible formats. Changing those settings affects future captures or transfers; it does not convert files already stored in the photo library.
What changes during HEIC-to-JPG conversion
The pixels are encoded again
JPG uses lossy compression. A high-quality setting can produce a visually faithful copy, but it will not be bit-for-bit equivalent to the HEIC image. Repeatedly opening and resaving the JPG can add more loss. Keep the HEIC original if it is your only full-quality copy.
Advanced HEIF features may be flattened
A HEIF file can contain more than one image or auxiliary information. A normal JPG represents one flattened image. Depth information, image sequences, transparency, and some HDR-related data do not map directly to ordinary JPG. A Live Photo also includes motion stored separately from the still image; converting the still does not create a JPG that contains the video component.
Metadata handling varies
Camera date, device details, location, orientation, and other EXIF metadata may be copied, changed, or removed by a conversion workflow. If privacy is the reason for creating a new copy, inspect the result or use the image metadata remover. If dates and camera information matter to an archive, verify them before deleting anything.
Choose useful JPG settings
Start with a high-quality output for photos containing hair, foliage, text, or fine texture. Lower quality reduces size but can create ringing around edges and block artifacts. Do not enlarge the pixel dimensions during conversion; interpolation cannot restore detail beyond the source.
For a website or form with a strict upload limit, first make a high-quality JPG, then reduce dimensions or compression only as much as needed. This separates format conversion from size reduction and makes it easier to identify which change affected the image.

- Keep the original HEIC in your photo library or backup.
- Open the HEIC to JPG tool and select the photo.
- Convert it at a high-quality setting for the first attempt.
- Open the JPG and check orientation, color, fine detail, and dimensions.
- Confirm that the target app or upload form accepts the JPG.
Troubleshooting
If the result is rotated, the source may rely on an orientation metadata flag that the destination ignores. A conversion should normally apply or preserve orientation, but verify portrait photos. If colors look washed out, the source may use a wide-gamut or HDR representation while the destination expects standard dynamic range. View both files in a color-managed application before deciding that the conversion failed.
For formats other than JPG, use the image converter. PNG is useful when you need lossless pixels or transparency, but it is often much larger than JPG for photographs.
