What are CRW files?

CRW is one of several file extensions used by Canon cameras. These are raw, uncompressed, high-resolution captured images based on the structure of the CIFF format.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the CRW format?

The CRW format is a multimedia standard in the current world of digital content. And it shows the following advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:

  • It allows the photographer to postpone the application of adjustments.
  • It has a high quality in its images, capturing every detail, such as the focus point, at the moment of shooting.
  • They work well with specific software packages from their manufacturers, such as Nikon Capture NX.
  • They contain more color and dynamic range than other formats.

Disadvantages:

  • Consume a lot of storage space.
  • Not a standardized format
  • Not all programs can open CRW

CRW Format FAQs

How do I open a CRW file?

The software that came with your Canon camera should be able to open images saved in CRW format, such as the EOS6D, EOSD30 and Powershot Pro1. In addition, you can open for free with IrfanView, Microsoft Windows Photos. You should also be able to open with Adobe applications, XARA Photo and AZImage.

CRW format guide

What to know before converting CRW

CRW is an early Canon camera RAW format based on Canon’s CIFF structure.

What this converter actually supports

Published still-image routes use the deployed ImageMagick and Ghostscript toolchain, with dedicated workflows for animation, camera RAW rendering, SVG tracing, and selected modern formats where the generic path is not sufficient.

Use TIFF to continue editing legacy captures or JPG to create an accessible archive preview.

The public upload limit is 1 GB. Convertr does not reduce dimensions, duration, resolution, or output quality merely to manage worker load.

Quality and format limits

PNG and TIFF are useful lossless working targets. JPG is lossy and removes transparency; WebP and AVIF may be lossy or lossless. Preserve source pixel dimensions unless resizing is intentional.

Older metadata and camera-specific color rendering may not map exactly.

Published CRW inputs

These links come from the active conversion catalog, not from a generic list of possible formats.

No inbound route is currently published.

Published CRW outputs

Choose one of these implemented routes; a listed extension is not a promise that every codec variant will decode.

If a CRW conversion fails

Check that the file opens in its original application, is not encrypted or DRM-protected, and really matches its extension. A damaged header, unsupported internal codec, missing linked asset, or mislabeled file can fail even when CRW is generally supported. Try a different published target only when it fits your goal; changing the extension by hand does not convert the file.
