The best audio format depends on what happens next. A small file for a car stereo has different requirements from a recording master that will be edited again. MP3, FLAC, WAV, and AAC can all be good choices, but they do not preserve audio in the same way.

Lossless and lossy are the important distinction

FLAC is lossless: decoding reconstructs the original PCM audio represented by the FLAC stream. WAV commonly stores uncompressed PCM, although the WAVE container can carry other encodings. Converting a PCM WAV to FLAC normally reduces storage without discarding audio samples.

MP3 and AAC are lossy. Their encoders discard information according to a perceptual model to reduce bitrate. A well-encoded delivery file can sound transparent in ordinary listening, but decoding it and saving it as FLAC does not restore discarded information. The FLAC copy will simply preserve the decoded result of the lossy source.

Format-by-format tradeoffs

MP3

MP3 remains useful because playback support is unusually broad. It supports tags and cover art through common metadata conventions, making it practical for music libraries, podcasts, and portable devices. Its weakness is efficiency compared with newer codecs: at low bitrates, artifacts can be more noticeable.

For music delivery where compatibility is the priority, a high-quality variable-bitrate encode or a properly made 320 kbps file is a reasonable choice. The 320 kbps MP3 converter is available when a workflow explicitly calls for that bitrate. A higher bitrate cannot improve a low-quality or already-lossy source.

FLAC

FLAC suits personal archives, distribution of lossless music, and intermediate storage when you want exact reconstruction of the PCM audio. It usually stores tags more conveniently than a basic WAV workflow. File size varies with the material, but it remains much larger than a typical lossy delivery file.

WAV

WAV is common in digital audio workstations, sample libraries, broadcast handoffs, and tools that expect PCM. It is simple and widely understood, but uncompressed files are large. Metadata support exists, yet support for particular chunks is inconsistent between applications. For a working master, keep project files and documented export settings as well as the WAV.

AAC

AAC is common in M4A audio and MP4 video. It is a practical delivery codec when the target platform supports it and may achieve better quality than MP3 at a comparable low bitrate. Compatibility is broad on current phones, browsers, and media applications, but an older standalone MP3 player may still require MP3.

Sample rate, bit depth, and bitrate

These measurements describe different things. Sample rate and bit depth apply directly to PCM representation. Lossy bitrate describes how much encoded data is used per second. Increasing an output sample rate above the source does not create new high-frequency detail, and converting 16-bit source audio to 24-bit does not recover precision that was not captured.

Keep the source sample rate unless the destination specifies another. For spoken audio, a lower lossy bitrate may be sufficient; dense music and transient material usually need more. Test with the actual program material rather than judging from the number alone.

Avoid unnecessary generations

Do not repeatedly convert between MP3 and AAC. Each lossy encode can add artifacts. Return to a lossless master when you need a new delivery format. If the only problem is an MP3 bitrate requirement, use the audio bitrate changer once and retain the original.

A sensible small workflow is: record or edit in a lossless format, keep that master, then create MP3 or AAC copies for delivery. That separates preservation from convenience and leaves you a clean source for future formats.
