What are HEIC files?

HEIC files are an image file format mainly used by Apple that uses High-Efficiency Video Coding to compress and store images.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the HEIC format?

Maak die HEIC na JPG-omskakelaar oop for the fastest path from iPhone HEIC or HEIF photos to standard JPG images that work on Windows, Android, upload forms, and email.

Advantages

  • HEIC files can be half the size of a JPEG.
  • Supports 16-bit color
  • Can save more than one image in one file.

Disadvantages

  • They're rarely used outside of Apple's ecosystem.

HEIC Format FAQs

The HEIC format is a multimedia standard in the current world of digital content. And it shows the following advantages and disadvantages:

Why are my pictures uploaded as HEIC?

To avoid your pictures from uploading as HEIC, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to Settings, and the "Photos"
  2. Find the "Transfer to Mac or PC" section
  3. Switch from "Keep Originals" to "Automatic"

That will do it! The next time you transfer photos to your PC, they'll automatically be uploaded as JPEG instead of HEIC.

How do I turn off HEIC on my iPhone?

To turn off the use of HEIC image files on your iPhone, follow these instructions:

  1. Head over to the camera app and open the settings
  2. In the "Camera Capture" section, switch from "High Efficiency" to "Most Compatible"

That will do it! The next time you transfer photos to your PC, they'll automatically be uploaded as JPEG instead of HEIC.

How do I open a HEIC file in Android?

You can open HEIC files in Android using the Google Photos app

HEIC format guide

What to know before converting HEIC

HEIC is a common HEIF image container, often using HEVC compression and sometimes storing multiple images, depth data, and metadata.

What this converter actually supports

Published still-image routes use the deployed ImageMagick and Ghostscript toolchain, with dedicated workflows for animation, camera RAW rendering, SVG tracing, and selected modern formats where the generic path is not sufficient.

Convert HEIC to JPG for compatibility or PNG when transparency or lossless raster output matters.

The public upload limit is 1 GB. Convertr does not reduce dimensions, duration, resolution, or output quality merely to manage worker load.

Quality and format limits

PNG and TIFF are useful lossless working targets. JPG is lossy and removes transparency; WebP and AVIF may be lossy or lossless. Preserve source pixel dimensions unless resizing is intentional.

A standard image export may select the primary image and omit depth maps, bursts, edits, HDR, or auxiliary items.

Published HEIC inputs

These links come from the active conversion catalog, not from a generic list of possible formats.

No inbound route is currently published.

Published HEIC outputs

Choose one of these implemented routes; a listed extension is not a promise that every codec variant will decode.

If a HEIC conversion fails

Check that the file opens in its original application, is not encrypted or DRM-protected, and really matches its extension. A damaged header, unsupported internal codec, missing linked asset, or mislabeled file can fail even when HEIC is generally supported. Try a different published target only when it fits your goal; changing the extension by hand does not convert the file.
