What changes when HEVC video becomes a GIF?

HEVC video and animated GIF use very different compression, color, timing, and media capabilities.

GIF files can be large

Animated GIF is much less efficient than HEVC video compression. Long videos, high frame rates, large dimensions, and detailed motion can produce a GIF that is much larger than the source file.

Lossy visual conversion

The HEVC picture is decoded and encoded again with GIF palettes of up to 256 colors per frame. Gradients, fine color detail, and complex motion can therefore show banding, dithering, or other visible changes.

Frame rate and timing

The converter keeps the source frame sequence and timing as closely as GIF allows. GIF stores frame delays in hundredths of a second, so some HEVC frame rates are represented approximately.

Source dimensions by default
