A digital video (DV) file is a file created by a digital camera and saved in a standard raw format. It is made up of Digital Interface Blocks (DIF), each 80 bytes in size.

Advantages:
The DV format records PCM audio without compression.
It has two possible audio configurations. One allows recording 2 channels of audio at 48 kHz and 16 bits, and the other possibility is 4 channels at 32 kHz and 12 bits.
The quality of the 2-channel, 48 kHz, 16-bit configuration is slightly higher than that of compact disc (CD).
Disadvantages:
Different programs may use DV files for different purposes, so you may have to try some of them in order to open your specific file.

What is DV resolution?
DV is a compressed, but high quality video format that uses the standard 4:3 screen dimensions. Almost all digital camcorders and computer video editing packages use this format. DV uses 480 lines of vertical resolution, and most computer editing packages translate these signals into a 720 x 480 image.

DV input/output is an IEEE1394 interface that allows you to send your digital video to another device, such as a computer for editing, or input digital video from another device for recording.
DV is a digital-video format used by tape camcorders, often stored as a raw DV stream or inside AVI or MOV.

Quality and format limits
Keep the original dimensions and frame rate unless you intentionally need a smaller result. Remuxing compatible streams avoids re-encoding; changing codecs is lossy, so repeated conversions should be avoided.
DV is interlaced and chroma-subsampled; deinterlacing or resizing choices affect the result.

Check that the file opens in its original application, is not encrypted or DRM-protected, and really matches its extension. A damaged header, unsupported internal codec, missing linked asset, or mislabeled file can fail even when DV is generally supported. Try a different published target only when it fits your goal; changing the extension by hand does not convert the file.
