What does flattening a PDF do?

Flattening makes visible form fields, annotations, markups, signature appearances, and layer output part of the PDF page content so the file is more final for upload, printing, or filing workflows.

Does PDF flattening reduce quality?

No. The default mode uses Ghostscript PDF output with image downsampling disabled. It does not use full-page rasterization, lower resolution, or compression as a load-saving shortcut.

Will flattening affect digital signatures?

Yes. Flattening rewrites the PDF structure and can invalidate cryptographic signatures. Use it when you need the visible signature or markup appearance finalized, not when you need signature validation preserved.

Can I flatten an encrypted PDF?

Unlock the PDF first if you know the open password and are authorized to modify it. Encrypted PDFs are not flattened directly.

Are uploaded PDFs private?
