Adobe Illustrator (AI)
AI is the native file format of Adobe Illustrator. It stores vector artwork such as logos, icons, and illustrations that can be scaled to any size without losing sharpness. Converting AI to PNG, JPG, or PDF makes the design viewable without Illustrator.
PNG
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster image format with lossless compression. It keeps every pixel exactly and supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, graphics, and images with text. PNG photos are usually larger than JPG files of the same image.
Before you convert an Adobe Illustrator file
Convertr reads the PDF-compatible part that Illustrator saves in every AI file by default. If the file was saved with "Create PDF Compatible File" turned off, it only holds a notice page. Convertr then stops with a clear message and never returns that notice as your result. Open the file in Illustrator, choose Save As, turn the option on and upload the file again.
Each artboard is one page of the PDF-compatible part. By default, Convertr converts the first artboard. Turn on "Convert all artboards" to get a ZIP with one image or SVG file per artboard, or one PDF with one page per artboard.
- Transparency and size
- PNG, WebP, AVIF and TIFF keep empty artboard areas transparent. JPG cannot store transparency, so empty areas become white. Images are rendered at 300 dpi at the full artboard size and are never scaled down.
- Colours and effects
- CMYK artwork is converted to RGB for screen formats. Spot colours, overprint and some Illustrator effects can look different. PDF output keeps the original colour space.
- Why SVG keeps your vectors
- SVG output is written from the vector data in the file. Paths, shapes and embedded images stay as they are, and nothing is traced from pixels, so the SVG stays sharp at any size. Text becomes glyph outlines, so it looks the same on computers without the font.
- Realistic limitations
- Multi-page, layered, animated, camera-raw, or very large images may be flattened, reduced to one frame, or rejected if the decoder cannot safely read them.
Privacy and file retention
Uploads and converted files are processed automatically and irreversibly deleted within 24 hours. You can delete them sooner with the delete control. Convertr does not read, mine, sell, or manually review file contents.
Read the privacy policyQuestions about Illustrator files
- Why does my AI file stop with a PDF compatibility message?
- The file was saved without PDF content. Open it in Illustrator, choose Save As, turn on "Create PDF Compatible File" and upload it again.
- Can I convert every artboard at once?
- Yes. Turn on "Convert all artboards". Images and SVG files come in a ZIP with one file per artboard; PDF output gets one page per artboard.
- Is the SVG a traced copy of a picture?
- No. The SVG is written from the vector data in the AI file, so lines, shapes and text outlines stay vectors.
- Are old Illustrator files supported?
- Files from Illustrator 9 and later work best. Many older PostScript-based AI files work too. If an old file cannot be read, save it again in a current version of Illustrator.
