AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a video container introduced by Microsoft in 1992. It can hold many different video and audio codecs, so playback depends on the codecs inside the file. AVI is still found in older camera footage and archives, and MP4 is the usual modern replacement.
GIF
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is an image format that supports simple animation. Each frame can use at most 256 colors, which suits graphics, icons, and short loops but not photos. GIF supports basic transparency and plays almost everywhere, which keeps it popular for memes and reactions.
What happens when AVI becomes GIF
Target format
GIF uses a palette of at most 256 colors per frame and can contain animation.
What changes
Frames are decoded from AVI and encoded into the GIF image format.
Audio, subtitles, chapters, and interactive media tracks are removed.

- The selected frames keep their source pixel dimensions unless resize settings are changed.

- Motion, audio, timing precision, and non-selected frames are not represented in a still image output.

- Inspect the output before replacing the source, especially when the formats use different layout, codec, or editing models.

- Password protection, corruption, missing fonts, macros, embedded objects, and unusually complex layouts can change or prevent conversion.
Conversion steps

Troubleshooting
- The AVI file is rejected or will not open.
- Confirm that the file is not empty, password-protected, or corrupt and that its real format matches the extension.
- The GIF file is larger than expected.
- Choose a more efficient codec or lower quality setting when available. Lossless and uncompressed targets are often larger by design.
- Transparency, color, or animation changed.
- Choose a target that supports the needed feature and keep the original file; JPG cannot store transparency or animation.
