M4A

M4A is an audio file in the MPEG-4 container, usually encoded with AAC or Apple Lossless (ALAC). It is the standard audio format of iTunes, Apple Music, and many voice recorders. M4A offers better quality than MP3 at similar sizes, but some older players only support MP3.

AAC

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a lossy audio codec designed as the successor to MP3. At the same bitrate it usually sounds better than MP3, and it is the standard audio format for Apple devices, YouTube, streaming services, and MP4 video. AAC audio is often stored in M4A or MP4 files.

What happens when M4A becomes AAC

Source format

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container that commonly carries AAC or Apple Lossless audio.

Target format

AAC is a lossy audio codec that is efficient at moderate bitrates.

What changes

Audio samples are decoded from M4A and encoded according to the AAC format and selected bitrate or quality.

What is preserved
Duration and audible content are preserved, subject to decoder support and any settings you change.
What may be lost
Tags, embedded artwork, chapters, and codec-specific metadata may not map to AAC.
Codec and quality implications
AAC uses lossy compression. A higher quality or bitrate can reduce new artifacts, but it cannot restore detail already missing from the M4A source.
Realistic limitations
Protected audio, malformed headers, unsupported codec variants, or files without a decodable audio stream cannot be converted.

Conversion steps

  1. Upload a M4A file no larger than 1 GB.
  2. Confirm that AAC is selected as the target.
  3. Start the conversion. A healthy compatible worker begins processing immediately.
  4. Download the AAC file and check the result before deleting your source.

Troubleshooting

The M4A file is rejected or will not open.
Confirm that the file is not empty, password-protected, or corrupt and that its real format matches the extension.
The AAC file is larger than expected.
Choose a more efficient codec or lower quality setting when available. Lossless and uncompressed targets are often larger by design.
The result has no sound or will not play.
Try a broadly supported target codec and verify that the source contains a decodable audio stream.

Privacy and file retention
