MJPEG (Motion JPEG) is a video format that stores each frame as a separate JPEG image. It is simple to decode and is used by webcams, IP cameras, and some digital cameras. MJPEG files are much larger than modern video formats, so they are often converted to MP4.
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a video container introduced by Microsoft in 1992. It can hold many different video and audio codecs, so playback depends on the codecs inside the file. AVI is still found in older camera footage and archives, and MP4 is the usual modern replacement.

AVI is an older video container whose playback support depends on the codecs inside it.
The MJPEG container is read and the selected video and audio streams are written into a AVI container.
Codecs may be transcoded even when the visible resolution and duration stay the same.
