Source format
MPG is the video source or target format for this conversion path.
MPG
MPG is a common file extension for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video. It is found in DVD rips, older camcorder footage, and TV recordings. MPG files are larger than modern formats at the same quality, so they are often converted to MP4.
GIF
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is an image format that supports simple animation. Each frame can use at most 256 colors, which suits graphics, icons, and short loops but not photos. GIF supports basic transparency and plays almost everywhere, which keeps it popular for memes and reactions.
What happens when MPG becomes GIF
Target format
GIF uses a palette of at most 256 colors per frame and can contain animation.
What changes
Frames are decoded from MPG and encoded into the GIF image format.
Audio, subtitles, chapters, and interactive media tracks are removed.
- What is preserved
- The selected frames keep their source pixel dimensions unless resize settings are changed.
- What may be lost
- Motion, audio, timing precision, and non-selected frames are not represented in a still image output.
- Codec and quality implications
- Inspect the output before replacing the source, especially when the formats use different layout, codec, or editing models.
- Realistic limitations
- Password protection, corruption, missing fonts, macros, embedded objects, and unusually complex layouts can change or prevent conversion.
Conversion steps
- Upload a MPG file no larger than 1 GB.
- Confirm that GIF is selected as the target.
- Start the conversion. A healthy compatible worker begins processing immediately.
- Download the GIF file and check the result before deleting your source.
Troubleshooting
- The MPG file is rejected or will not open.
- Confirm that the file is not empty, password-protected, or corrupt and that its real format matches the extension.
- The GIF file is larger than expected.
- Choose a more efficient codec or lower quality setting when available. Lossless and uncompressed targets are often larger by design.
- Transparency, color, or animation changed.
- Choose a target that supports the needed feature and keep the original file; JPG cannot store transparency or animation.
Privacy and file retention
Uploads and converted files are processed automatically and irreversibly deleted within 24 hours. You can delete them sooner with the delete control. Convertr does not read, mine, sell, or manually review file contents.
