WTV
WTV (Windows Recorded TV Show) is the format used by Windows Media Center to store recorded TV programs. It holds video, audio, and program metadata from TV tuners. Windows Media Center has been discontinued, so WTV recordings are often converted to MP4.
M4A
M4A is an audio file in the MPEG-4 container, usually encoded with AAC or Apple Lossless (ALAC). It is the standard audio format of iTunes, Apple Music, and many voice recorders. M4A offers better quality than MP3 at similar sizes, but some older players only support MP3.
What happens when WTV becomes M4A
Source format
WTV is the video source or target format for this conversion path.
Target format
M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container that commonly carries AAC or Apple Lossless audio.
What changes
The audio stream is decoded from the WTV container and encoded as M4A audio.
The video track, frames, subtitles, chapters, and visual metadata are not included in the audio output.
- What is preserved
- Audio duration and channel layout are preserved when the source stream and target codec support them.
- What may be lost
- All visual content is intentionally discarded.
- Codec and quality implications
- Inspect the output before replacing the source, especially when the formats use different layout, codec, or editing models.
- Realistic limitations
- A WTV file with no decodable audio stream cannot produce M4A audio. Corrupt, encrypted, or unsupported codecs can also fail.
Conversion steps
- Upload a WTV file no larger than 1 GB.
- Confirm that M4A is selected as the target.
- Start the conversion. A healthy compatible worker begins processing immediately.
- Download the M4A file and check the result before deleting your source.
Troubleshooting
- The WTV file is rejected or will not open.
- Confirm that the file is not empty, password-protected, or corrupt and that its real format matches the extension.
- The M4A file is larger than expected.
- Choose a more efficient codec or lower quality setting when available. Lossless and uncompressed targets are often larger by design.
- The result has no sound or will not play.
- Try a broadly supported target codec and verify that the source contains a decodable audio stream.
