JPEG is a standard image file format used to contain lossy images.

The JPEG format is the international standard for lossy compression in images. It has several advantages that gave it such status. However, the format is not perfect, and it has its drawbacks. Those are:
JPG and JPEG are interchangeable terms and refer to the same format. They are synonyms.
The JPG name for the format comes from the JPEG filename extension, which usually is .jpg. But it can also be .jpeg, showing no differences between the two. You can even rename .jpeg to .jpg without changing the files themselves.
The JPEG reduces data size using lossy compression. That method of compression discards imperceptible data parts, making the file smaller. The parts are permanently removed from the file, or lost in other words. This allows JPEG files to be considerably smaller than most image formats.

JPEG names the compression standard; .jpeg and .jpg files normally use the same lossy image encoding and container conventions.

Check that the file opens in its original application, is not encrypted or DRM-protected, and really matches its extension. A damaged header, unsupported internal codec, missing linked asset, or mislabeled file can fail even when JPEG is generally supported. Try a different published target only when it fits your goal; changing the extension by hand does not convert the file.
