M4V
M4V is a video format developed by Apple and based on MP4. It usually holds H.264 video with AAC audio and is used by iTunes and the Apple TV app. M4V files bought from iTunes may be copy-protected; unprotected M4V files convert easily to MP4.
AIFF
AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) is an uncompressed audio format developed by Apple. It preserves full audio quality and stores metadata, so it is widely used for music production, mastering, and archiving on Mac systems. AIFF files are large, so they are often converted to MP3, AAC, or FLAC for everyday listening.
What happens when M4V becomes AIFF
Source format
M4V is the video source or target format for this conversion path.
Target format
AIFF commonly stores uncompressed PCM audio and can be much larger than compressed audio.
What changes
The audio stream is decoded from the M4V container and encoded as AIFF audio.
The video track, frames, subtitles, chapters, and visual metadata are not included in the audio output.
- What is preserved
- Audio duration and channel layout are preserved when the source stream and target codec support them.
- What may be lost
- All visual content is intentionally discarded.
- Codec and quality implications
- Inspect the output before replacing the source, especially when the formats use different layout, codec, or editing models.
- Realistic limitations
- A M4V file with no decodable audio stream cannot produce AIFF audio. Corrupt, encrypted, or unsupported codecs can also fail.
Conversion steps
- Upload a M4V file no larger than 1 GB.
- Confirm that AIFF is selected as the target.
- Start the conversion. A healthy compatible worker begins processing immediately.
- Download the AIFF file and check the result before deleting your source.
Troubleshooting
- The M4V file is rejected or will not open.
- Confirm that the file is not empty, password-protected, or corrupt and that its real format matches the extension.
- The AIFF file is larger than expected.
- Choose a more efficient codec or lower quality setting when available. Lossless and uncompressed targets are often larger by design.
- The result has no sound or will not play.
- Try a broadly supported target codec and verify that the source contains a decodable audio stream.
