M4V is a video format developed by Apple and based on MP4. It usually holds H.264 video with AAC audio and is used by iTunes and the Apple TV app. M4V files bought from iTunes may be copy-protected; unprotected M4V files convert easily to MP4.
AVI
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a video container introduced by Microsoft in 1992. It can hold many different video and audio codecs, so playback depends on the codecs inside the file. AVI is still found in older camera footage and archives, and MP4 is the usual modern replacement.

Codecs may be transcoded even when the visible resolution and duration stay the same.

- Extra subtitle, attachment, chapter, or alternate audio tracks may be omitted when the target container or selected settings do not support them.

- Realistic limitations
- A valid M4V extension does not guarantee that every codec inside the container is decodable. Corrupt, encrypted, or unusual streams can fail.
Conversion steps

- Open settings only if you need to change codec, quality, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, or audio behavior.

Troubleshooting

- Confirm that the file is not empty, password-protected, or corrupt and that its real format matches the extension.
- The AVI file is larger than expected.
- Choose a more efficient codec or lower quality setting when available. Lossless and uncompressed targets are often larger by design.
- The result has no sound or will not play.
- Try a broadly supported target codec and verify that the source contains a decodable audio stream.
