RAF

RAF is the camera RAW format of Fujifilm digital cameras. It stores unprocessed sensor data, including data from Fujifilm's X-Trans sensors, for later adjustment. RAF files need RAW-capable software, so they are often converted to JPG, PNG, or TIFF.

JPG

JPG is the most common file extension for JPEG images and the standard format for photos. It uses lossy compression that makes files small while keeping good visual quality, and every device, browser, and app can open it. JPG does not support transparency, and each new lossy save can reduce quality slightly.

Layers, editable vectors, camera-raw controls, animation, high bit depth, and metadata are preserved only when JPG supports them.
Codec and quality implications
JPG uses lossy compression. A higher quality or bitrate can reduce new artifacts, but it cannot restore detail already missing from the RAF source.
Realistic limitations
Multi-page, layered, animated, camera-raw, or very large images may be flattened, reduced to one frame, or rejected if the decoder cannot safely read them.

  3. Download the JPG file and check the result before deleting your source.

Troubleshooting

The RAF file is rejected or will not open.
Confirm that the file is not empty, password-protected, or corrupt and that its real format matches the extension.
The JPG file is larger than expected.
Choose a more efficient codec or lower quality setting when available. Lossless and uncompressed targets are often larger by design.
Transparency, color, or animation changed.
Choose a target that supports the needed feature and keep the original file; JPG cannot store transparency or animation.
