EPS
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a graphics format based on the PostScript language. It can contain vector artwork, text, and embedded raster images and was long a standard for logos and print layouts. Many apps cannot display EPS directly, so it is often converted to PNG, JPG, or PDF.
SVG
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based vector image format for the web. It describes shapes, paths, and text, so images stay sharp at any size and files are often small. SVG suits logos, icons, and illustrations, while some apps need a PNG or JPG version instead.
Before you convert an EPS to SVG
Convertr runs the PostScript of the EPS file in a safe mode (Ghostscript with -dSAFER) and writes the drawing as SVG. The page is the bounding box of the EPS, so the SVG has no extra border.
EPS preview images (TIFF or WMF previews) are ignored; only the real PostScript drawing is converted. You can also get the same drawing as a vector PDF: choose PDF in the converter above.
- What stays vector
- Lines, shapes, colours and embedded images stay as they are in the EPS. Nothing is traced from pixels, so the SVG is sharp at any size.
- Text becomes outlines
- Text is drawn as glyph outlines, so it looks the same everywhere but cannot be edited as text. SVG uses RGB colours, so CMYK colours are converted to RGB.
- PDF output
- PDF output keeps the vectors, embedded images at full resolution and the original colours, including CMYK.
- Limits
- Fonts that are not embedded in the EPS are replaced by similar fonts. A PostScript file without a bounding box keeps the page size that it sets itself.
Privacy and file retention
Uploads and converted files are processed automatically and irreversibly deleted within 24 hours. You can delete them sooner with the delete control. Convertr does not read, mine, sell, or manually review file contents.
Read the privacy policyQuestions about EPS to SVG
- Is the EPS preview image used?
- No. The preview is a small bitmap for programs that cannot read PostScript. Convertr ignores it and converts the real vector drawing.
- Can I get a PDF instead of an SVG?
- Yes. Choose PDF in the converter above. The PDF keeps the vectors, the images and CMYK colours.
- Is it safe to convert EPS files from other people?
- Convertr runs every EPS in the safe mode of Ghostscript, which blocks access to files and to the system. The file is only drawn.
- Can I edit the text in the SVG?
- Not as text. Letters become vector outlines. You can still change their colour and shape in a vector editor.
- What happens to my files?
- Your files are converted automatically and deleted within 24 hours. You can delete them sooner with the delete button. Nobody looks at your files.
